The letter 'm' was used by the Egyptians to represent waves; the earliest form of the hieroglyphic sign had wavy vertical lines. The symbol was changed by the Phoenicians, with the wavy lines moved to the top of the symbol, and the Romans later adapted it into the modern form. By the 16th century, dowsing for water was a well-established practice for locating underground water sources. This image is from Norman's alphabet project.
